Treatment for ADHD
Understanding the Treatment for ADHD
Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is an illness that is characterized by patterns of extreme inattention and/or the presence of excessive hyperactivity. These impulsive, hyperactive, and/or chronic patterns of inattention become problematic when they begin to cause significant disruption or dysfunction in a person’s ability to function appropriately on a daily basis. While historically ADHD was most commonly diagnosed in children and adolescents, it has recently become more recognized as affecting adults as well. There is no cure for ADHD, but when people receive appropriate treatment, they are able to move forward and live happy, productive, and successful lives.
Having attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder can cause many problems in an individual’s life. At Greenleaf Behavioral Health Hospital, we are dedicated to providing every client who comes to us for treatment with the highest quality of care in the most comfortable environment possible by offering programs that are specially designed to help treat people who are struggling with the symptoms of this disorder. Our 113-bed hospital in Valdosta has recently been completely renovated, with each unit undergoing a full remodel. All of the furnishings throughout the hospital are also brand new, allowing us to provide care for our clients in a modern and clean atmosphere.
Helping a Loved One
How to Help a Loved One or Family Member Get Treatment for ADHD
f you have a loved one who spends each day struggling with the symptoms of ADHD, you may feel helpless as to what you can do to help. You may also be frustrated by the fact that they have difficulties with things like staying on task and remembering important dates. You may not understand why he or she is constantly missing important details of conversations or why he or she seems to have difficulty maintaining healthy interpersonal relationships. You may also be wondering whether or not your loved one is truly at a point where a therapeutic intervention at an ADHD treatment center is necessary. Here are some examples of ADHD symptoms that may be indicative of your loved one’s need for treatment:
- Sudden bursts of hyperactivity at inappropriate times
- Sudden, unprovoked angry outbursts
- Having difficulty concentrating, which has negatively impacted his or her ability to perform well at work
- Chronic agitation
- Severe anxiety
- Social isolation
If these are things that you have noticed your loved one displaying, or if things similar to those mentioned have been occurring, it is probably a good idea to discuss the idea of getting treatment for your loved one. If the symptoms are ignored or brushed aside, the behaviors and distress will likely continue to worsen, causing further disruption in the individual’s life.
Why Choose Us
Why Consider Treatment at Greenleaf Behavioral Health Hospital in Valdosta, GA
When left untreated, the symptoms of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder can lead to significant impairment in an individual’s ability to function, causing conflict within the person’s work life, home life, and social life. Without treatment, some people with ADHD will end up finding themselves experiencing ongoing feelings of failure and worthlessness as they feel unable to control their thoughts and behaviors. The symptoms of ADHD also have the potential to cause people to begin searching for alternative methods of self-medicating, including the use of alcohol or other drugs. However, with proper therapeutic interventions, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder can be successfully treated and those suffering from it can go on to lead productive lives, void of the symptoms that have caused them so much distress.
Inpatient treatment programs have proven to be an extremely beneficial way of thoroughly treating ADHD. These programs are able to determine each individual’s exact needs and develop treatment plans based solely on those unique needs. Not only will clients be provided with around-the-clock care to help mediate the symptoms, but they will also be able to leave the stresses of their everyday environments in order to focus solely on becoming well. By participating in an inpatient program, people are able to learn more about the different aspects of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder while also discovering that they are not alone in the struggles that they are facing.

Treatment Options
Treatment Options Offered at Greenleaf Behavioral Health Hospital
Upon arriving at our hospital for treatment for ADHD, each client will participate in a thorough assessment in order to provide our staff with all of the necessary information required for us to determine his or her exact needs. Once the evaluation is complete, it will be reviewed by one of our psychiatrists in order to determine the most appropriate level of care and to confirm admission. Our approach to treatment is client-centered, and all of our therapy is designed to meet the individual needs of our clients through a comprehensive and compassionate approach led by a team of highly trained psychiatrists and mental health professionals. Some of the treatment methods that we use here at Greenleaf Behavioral Health Hospital include:
Medication management: In order to thoroughly treat the symptoms of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, medication is commonly integrated as part of the treatment plan. Clients will meet with a psychiatrist daily at our treatment center for medication management in order to ensure the therapeutic effectiveness of the medication, as well as to make any changes that may be necessary.
Individual therapy sessions are held on an as-needed basis. These sessions are designed to be a time where clients can meet on a one-to-one basis with their therapist in order to learn how to manage the symptoms of ADHD and work towards developing coping skills and other tools that can be used to help control their behaviors.
Group therapy sessions are held four times each day and cover a wide variety of topics. Some of the major topics that are discussed during these group sessions include stress management, anger management, learning how to effectively express emotions, and learning how to develop appropriate communication and life skills.
Family therapy sessions are also held at our hospital on an as-needed basis. However, the amount of family sessions can be increased to meet the needs of any client, as is appropriate to his or her individual treatment plan. Additionally, we offer educational sessions to the family members of our clients in order to help them learn more about ADHD and guide them in how they can best support their loved one.
Recreational therapy is held once a day for adults. This is a time where individuals are provided with the opportunity to participate in physical activities such as playing basketball and tennis or using our gym and pool facilities.
We also pride ourselves in the working relationships that we have with providers outside of our hospital. We allow outpatient therapists to come in and meet with their clients while they are engaged at our treatment center, adding to the comfort level that we strive to provide for our clients.
Continuing Care
Continuing Care and Levels of Treatment
At Greenleaf Behavioral Health Hospital, we are proud to offer a variety of levels of care for our clients so that we are able to meet their ongoing needs. As discharge approaches, you will work closely with your treatment team to create an aftercare plan that assists you in sustaining lifelong recovery. We offer a partial hospitalization program (PHP) for adults that meets four hours per day. This outpatient service is designed to allow you to slowly reintegrate back into your regular life while continuing to work on healing. Some clients find that they have made enough progress through our inpatient services that they are able to return home with referrals to outpatient therapy and/or available community resources in Valdosta.
