Treatment for Borderline Personality Disorder
Understanding the Treatment for Borderline Personality Disorder
Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a mental illness that is characterized by severe fluctuations in a person’s emotions which causes him or her to experience feelings of extreme instability. The chronic conflicts that occur inside the minds of people with BPD oftentimes lead them to act out in unorthodox ways, which can be confusing to those around them. The symptoms of borderline personality disorder can be debilitating not only mentally, but physically as well. They will affect not only the individual suffering from the disorder, but also the friends, family, and loved ones of that person as well. Individuals with BPD are also commonly known to participate in reckless and impulsive behaviors as they struggle with the inner turmoil that they are constantly experiencing.

Helping a Loved One
How to Help a Loved One or Family Member Get Treatment for Borderline Personality Disorder
If you have a loved one who is displaying symptoms of borderline personality disorder, you may be experiencing a wide variety of emotions. You may be confused by the strange ways that you have seen him or her acting, and you may feel helpless as to what you can do to help. You may notice that one day he or she seems to be acting fine, but that the next day your loved one seems to act in a way that is the complete opposite of how you know him or her to be. If you are debating whether or not your loved one is in need of treatment, here are some signs to look for:
- One day feeling overly attached to a person, and the following day acting spiteful or hateful towards that same person
- Engaging in self-harming behaviors
- Experiencing an inability to control anger
- Excessive and hysterical crying episodes
- Extreme reactions to perceived abandonment, even when there is no true evidence of the abandonment occurring
- Paranoia, delusions, and dissociation
- Episodes of derealization and depersonalization
- Unstable, fluctuating image of one’s self
- Extreme mood swings
- Suicidal thoughts and attempts
If these are things that you have noticed in your loved one, then it is imperative that you help him or her find treatment as soon as possible. If left untreated, your loved one’s symptoms will only continue to worsen, potentially leading to devastating consequences.

Treatment Options
Treatment Options Offered at Greenleaf Behavioral Health Hospital
Upon arriving at our treatment center, each client will participate in a comprehensive assessment in order to provide our staff with all of the information necessary to determine his or her exact treatment needs. Once the evaluation is complete, it will be reviewed by one of our psychiatrists in order to determine the appropriate level of care and to confirm admission. Our approach to treatment is client-centered, and all of our treatment is designed to meet the individual needs of our clients through a compassionate approach that is led by a team of highly trained psychiatrists and mental health professionals. Some of the treatment methods that we use here at Greenleaf Behavioral Health Hospital include:
Medication management: In many cases, medication is used to help alleviate some of the specific symptoms of borderline personality disorder. It may also be used to treat any co-occurring disorders that may exist. Clients who are prescribed medication will meet with a psychiatrist daily in order to ensure the therapeutic effectiveness of the medication, as well as to make any changes that may be necessary.
Individual therapy sessions are held on an as-needed basis at our treatment center and are meant to be a time where clients can meet privately with a therapist in order to learn how to cope with the symptoms of BPD and work towards developing coping skills and the other tools they need to help control their thoughts and regulate their emotions.
Group therapy sessions are held four times each day and cover a wide variety of topics. Some of the major topics that are discussed during these group sessions include anger management, stress management, and learning how to effectively express emotions and develop appropriate communication and life skills.
Family therapy sessions are held on an as-needed basis at our hospital with the amount being increased or decreased depending upon the client’s individual treatment plan. Additionally, we offer educational sessions to the family members of our clients in order to help them learn more about borderline personality disorder and guide them in how they can best support their loved one.
Recreational therapy is held once a day and is a time where individuals are provided with the opportunity to participate in physical activities such as playing tennis and basketball or using our pool and gym facilities.
We also pride ourselves in the fact that we have working relationships with providers outside of our hospital. We allow outpatient therapists to come in and meet with their clients while being treated in our hospital, adding to the comfort level that we strive to provide for our clients.
Depending upon one’s specific treatment plan, A.A. and N.A. meetings are offered once per week.
Continuing Care
Continuing Care and Levels of Treatment
At Greenleaf Behavioral Health Hospital, we are proud to offer a variety of levels of care for our clients so that we are able to meet their ongoing needs. As discharge approaches, you will work closely with your treatment team to create an aftercare plan that assists you in sustaining lifelong recovery. We offer a partial hospitalization program (PHP) for adults that meets four hours per day. This outpatient service is designed to allow you to slowly reintegrate back into your regular life while continuing to work on healing. Some clients find that they have made enough progress through our inpatient services that they are able to return home with referrals to outpatient therapy and/or available community resources in Valdosta. Additionally, we offer an aftercare program every Thursday that is designed specifically to check in on clients who have been discharged from our programs.
