Treatment for Intermittent Explosive Disorder
Understanding the Treatment for Intermittent Explosive Disorder
Intermittent explosive disorder (IED) is an impulse control disorder that is characterized by episodes of unwarranted anger. Individuals who are suffering from IED may attack others and destroy possessions, sometimes resulting in bodily harm and property damage. Additionally, those with IED may injure themselves during an outburst. People with IED often have an extremely difficult time controlling their temper, and their behavior is grossly out of proportion to the situation that they are in. After an attack, these individuals often feel regret, remorse, and even embarrassment.
If you or an important person in your life is struggling with the symptoms of IED, it can be hard to know where to start. As one of the best IED treatment centers in Valdosta, at Greenleaf Behavioral Health Hospital we are dedicated to providing high-quality care for individuals who are suffering from behavioral health and/or chemical dependency issues. Helping a Loved One
How to Help a Loved One or Family Member Get Treatment for Intermittent Explosive Disorder
Living with someone who has intermittent explosive disorder can be extremely challenging and, at times, even frightening because you may never know when your loved one is going to have an outburst. An individual with IED can disrupt the entire household and leave family members at a loss for what they can do to fix the situation. Here are some tips that may be helpful when trying to get your loved one the help that he or she needs:
- First, take the time to learn as much as you can about IED because the more that you know about this disorder, the more you will be able to understand what your loved one is going through.
- Research possible treatment options that you can present to your loved one when you talk to him or her.
- When you approach your loved one, do not minimize his or her feelings or judge him or her in any way.
- Make sure you tell your loved one how much you care about him or her and want what is best for his or her overall wellbeing.
- Offer to go with your loved one to appointments and continue to support him or her throughout the entire treatment process.
- Make sure to take time for yourself.
Why Choose Us
Why Consider Treatment at Greenleaf Behavioral Health Hospital in Valdosta, GA
Individuals who have been diagnosed with intermittent explosive disorder often display violent behaviors that are both impulsive and assaultive. If left untreated, these frequent outbursts can cause a number of disruptions in an individual’s life. For example, it can lead to the destruction of a marriage or other relationships, while also potentially causing individuals to get in trouble with the law. Adults may also struggle in occupational settings, and can end up losing their jobs due to their short temper. In order to gain control of the symptoms of IED and avoid long-term severe consequences, an individual must seek care at a treatment center as soon as possible.
Oftentimes, a treatment center or hospital that specializes in treating IED can be one of the most beneficial ways of getting help. When arriving at a treatment center, individuals will partake in a thorough evaluation to help rule out any potential medical causes for the aggressive behavior and then determine the best course of action to take in order to ensure that their needs are fully met. Additionally, an inpatient program can provide medication management, which can help some of the symptoms of IED subside by stabilizing an individual’s mood.

Treatment Options
Treatment Options Offered at Greenleaf Behavioral Health Hospital
Upon arrival at our treatment center, each client will complete an initial assessment, which will then be reviewed by one of our psychiatrists in order to confirm admission. This evaluation will give us a clear understanding of the person’s presenting concerns, including the presence of any co-occurring disorders. Our treatment is designed to meet the individual needs of our clients through a comprehensive and compassionate approach that is led by a team of highly trained psychiatrists and mental health professionals. Some the treatment methods we employ here at Greenleaf Behavioral Health Hospital include:
Medication management: Depending upon an individual’s needs, treatment plans may include the use of medication; however, the use of such is always determined on a case-by-case basis. All individuals who do take medication will meet with a psychiatrist daily for medication management.
Individual sessions: Individual therapy sessions are held on an as-needed basis and are a time where clients can meet privately with a therapist.
Group sessions: Group therapy is held four times a day and includes discussions on a wide variety of topics. Some of the major topics included in these group sessions include stress management, anger management, effectively expressing emotions, and developing life skills.
Family therapy: After an initial session that is held at the time of admission, family therapy is offered on an as-needed basis. Additionally, family education is provided to those who have a family member in our treatment center.
Recreational therapy: Recreational therapy is held once a day at our treatment center for adults, providing them with the opportunity to participate in activities such as tennis, basketball, swimming, or gym time.
Depending upon individual treatment needs, we also provide the following:
- A.A. meetings
- N.A. meetings
- Case management
- Outside therapist meetings
Continuing Care
Continuing Care and Levels of Treatment
At Greenleaf Behavioral Health Hospital, we are pleased to provide options for outpatient services. These services include a partial hospitalization program (PHP) for adults that is held 4 hours a day. At the time of discharge, each client will meet with his or her treatment team in order to set him or her up with an outpatient therapist and determine the appropriate level of aftercare services in Valdosta or elsewhere. Some clients find it best to step down into our PHP, while others are ready to be discharged home. Once clients are discharged from our outpatient services, we hold an aftercare program every Thursday evening in order to check in on their wellbeing.
